Use your ancient Bank Americard or Mastercharge to buy some vintage Marvel junk

marveljunk

There are a lot of things going on in this ad for your typical assemblage of late-1960s/early-1970s Marvel junk. First, are the Super Shields just Frisbees? And just what exactly is it that they shoot out of their centers? Since Spider-Man’s hand is at the center of his, we think “web fluid.” But since the Hulk’s crotch is at the center of his, well, YUCK. Anyway… Second, Captain America or Spider-Man showing up at a crime scene in those dopey cars would pretty much undercut any superhero cred they might have or ever hope to have. Like a guy picking up a blind date in a wood-paneled minivan. And last, that’s Superman down there in the lower left. We know it’s Superman. Just leave the “S” on next time, litigiousness be damned.

That last item is the Great Comic Book Heroes by Jules Feiffer, which I believe is the first (1965) mainstream-published book to take comics seriously.
