Protect your valuable brain with the pinnacle of 1940s leather helmet technology
June 26, 2013
While the velvet-covered chin strap is a nice touch, you’d get about as much protection from this old-timey helmet as you would a babushka. You know why it was used by pilots? Because if a combat pilot finds himself in a position where he’ll need a helmet, he’s already screwed. Cloth, leather, steel — makes no difference.
It would definitely come in handy for your Amelia Earhart cosplay, though. If you’re into that sort of thing.

Heh. Reminds of this sailors’ cap I had when I was little, you know, the kind Popeye and Gilligan had. Anyhoo, I wore it around the farm for a whole week one summer, my ma threw it into the washing machine, and it shrunk to the size of a mushroom.
It was really a good thing that happened; if I had wore that hat to school I probably would’ve gotten clobbered.
Now that I think about it, with that tiny hat on my round head I could’ve really rocked a Mr. Myxlpylk look…well, no…actually, maybe it was better Ma threw it away.
