1960s Cars: Unsmall at Any Speed
December 6, 2011
I find an ad for cheap cars a bit odd in a comic book. I realize comics have had and always will have an adult reading contingent (perhaps ads for kid stuff would stick out more these days), but automobiles seem a bridge too far. This kind of sticks out when compared to the usual crap. Like rods and reels in a romance book.

This just goes to show that car buyers have been being bombarded with clever marketing ploys for decades. This is a type of affiliate pitch, akin to Costco, where buyers are promised exclusive savings if they become a member of a special buying club. This ad belongs in my museum!
On a related theme, I was a member of one of those BMG CD clubs when I was in college. I managed to escape with my life and the shirt on my back.
There are ads in this month’s DCs for a $15,000 Harley.
I suppose that fits in a bit more now what with the aging (read: dwindling) readership.
If you look closely, the ad reveals the gimmick: They are used taxicabs.
Missed that — maybe it’s time to get glasses. And maybe the cars came with a complimentary tree-shaped air freshener and Judd Hirsch. One can hope.
