I’ll take “Bizarre Sexual Fetishes” for a thousand, Alex – Superman’s Girl Friend Lois Lane #73

June 12, 2010

I’m not even going to read this one.  I don’t want anything to impinge on the wonderful idea that this cover (drawn by Kurt Schaffenberger) is a sort of weird turn on for somebody.  I mean, I’ve heard of some odd predilections, but “Tie me up on a slab and whip a Howdy Doody-esque effigy of me” is definitely a new one.  And I’m certain that the associated story involves a possessed dummy or something, and that can never live up to the sex angle.

Of course, Freud once said this: “The only abnormal sex is no sex at all.”

Whip away, Lois.

One can, without hesitation, say that almost the entirety of Ms Lane’s series revolves around ‘weird’ sex.

You’re absolutely right. There was something about this one that tickled my fancy, though. Maybe it’s the gigantic, stupid smile on the dummy.

You know, I’ve been holding off on collecting Superman’s Girl Friend Lois Lane until I get more of my 60’s Action and Superman collection complete…but it’s covers like this one that make me want to rethink my position on that.

I was kind of in the same boat, but then I had a “Why not?” moment. The inside content is very often lacking, but you can’t argue with the goofy charm of the covers.

Take a look at Craig Yoe’s book “Secret Identity: The Fetish Art of Superman’s Co-creator Joe Shuster”. Craig posits that the artists at DC knew what Joe was doing and inserted little echoes of it to rub DC’s nose in what they’d done to him.
    Thanks!
