Are those pictures of Locksmithing Institute graduates at the top of the ad, or the last known photographs of wanted safe-cracking fugitives? Is that a distinction without a difference?

The feller in the middle (who looks like a blobfish) earned $ 1,000 while training? If that was 1970-ish, you’re talking 6 grand (per inflation calculator). I think you are spot-on with your analysis.
I just assume that the $1,000 came in fenced jewelry and untraceable bills.
