I’ll help, Meat Loaf! – “Heroes Helping Heroes”

August 21, 2010

I remember seeing this ad in my youth and not knowing who the hell Meat Loaf was. Meatloaf was the thing that my grandmother would sometimes cook when I stayed with her and my grandfather (and her meatloaf was really good), not a rock star. At least the ad managed to convey that he was a heavyset sweaty man with a guitar.

It’s a fairly accurate portrayal, now that I think about it. That’s about all you need to know about him. Though I should note that they made his name one word, when he usually has it as two. Or maybe he had it as one word back then.

You know what? I really don’t care.

I’m not making fun — this was an ad to raise some funds for the Special Olympics. That’s a cause you can’t mock. Well, unless you’re South Park.

Go ahead, Meat Loaf. Give ’em everything you’ve got.

Yeah, this ad was somewhat mystifying at the time to me as well. Strange, it had been a decade or more since his last hit when this ad appeared, and his revival in the 90s was still a long way off. Of the 10-16 olds reading most of the comics carrying this ad, were there any who recognized this man?

On a side note, Meat Loaf’s Wikipedia page is pretty entertaining. He’s apparently done everything at one time or another. His first gig with his band Meat Loaf Soul was opening for Van Morrison. His first recordings were with Motown. He filled in as singer on a Ted Nugent album. He tried stand-up comedy.

I always like it when he shows up in a movie — my inevitable reaction is this: “Is… is that… Meat Loaf?”
