The Amazing Spider-Man 2 teaser — now with 63% more amazing!

December 5, 2013

As someone who didn’t think the first Amazing Spider-Man was a total waste of time, but was less than enthused with the angsty elan of a skateboarding Peter Parker having fun beating people up — amongst other things — I can say that the above trailer for the senses-shattering sequel looks like less of the same (if that’s an actual phrase). A Goblin glider! Rhino’s horn! Jamie Foxx in his White Chicks makeup, which will give every lover of comic book movies soul-chilling flashbacks to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze! Wasn’t Paul Giamatti in this?! A love interest played by an actress who’s not Kirsten Dunst! Yippee!

In all honesty, Electro’s powers look well-realized, though most of us still secretly yearn for the goofy yellow and green costume with the lightning bolt mask. The whole thing appears to be going for the gusto, and with Spider-Man and his colorful rogue’s gallery that’s not a bad thing. We might be halfway to a full Sinister Six by runtime’s end.

And this has nothing to do with the trailer, but can’t we get J.K. Simmons to play J. Jonah Jameson again? Forever, for that matter?

Hey, I didn’t think the first one sucked. You had Ryhs Ifans (who has incredible potential for playing a dangerous sociopath) Martin Sheen, and hell, even Aunt May wasn’t totally annoying for a change. I and was perked up when I heard Jamie Foxx was gonna play Electro (lightning-shaped headpiece or no) but that blue makeup seems a little over the top for me. But we’ll see. The good Lord knows I’ve been wrong before, about so many, many things….
My understanding is Chris Cooper is going to be Norman Osborn. Great actor. But some guy over at Marvel was drawing Norman as a younger James Caan. Now, that would’ve been cool. He’s too old now, but…Hell, I’d pay money to see that…probably…

Oh, and yeah, they gotta get Simmons back. Absolutely. It was the role he was born to play.

So they’ve gone back to numbering sequels? I thought we were done with that?

I much prefer numbers to wan focus-grouped pablum, crap like The Amazing Spider-Man: Revenge of the Darkness.

I thought the first one was great. Garfield’s Parker is far more accurate.

I’ll say this: Garfield would have been spectacular (no pun) in the Raimi movies.
